Looking for ways to add more texture to your weaving?
Tired of trying to get a thin line in your tapestry?
Wondering how others do it?
Or maybe you want the effect of embroidery but like the idea of it being woven in an ancient traditional method.
Discover the secrets of Soumak!
Most tapestry weavers are introduced to Soumak as a way to stabilize a hem. I’ll bet you didn’t know there are endless variations of that simple wrapping method that can be used to create texture and movement to your work.
I teach an online course called The Many Faces of Soumak. It is a 3 month comprehensive deep-dive into the various Soumak techinques.
Many of these techniques are not widely known or taught.
The course is broken up into categories beginning with the most common technique, Single Soumak and building from that to very unusual methods that include more complex textures like Double Soumak and Knots.
Here’s an overview of the course:
The Many Faces of Soumak is an online course with forever access. Enrollment is open. There is no start and end date. The course format is a “drip” method. Every two weeks new content becomes available from the time of signup for a total of six modules. Each module includes 4 to 7 pre-recorded videos, each demonstrating yet another form of Soumak. Each video is supported by written text and photos as well as a pdf.
Within each module, there is also a slide-show of artists working with Soumak and a section on applying the techniques to tapestry.
Q&A’s and Student Show slide-shows are included on an ongoing basis.
Every piece of content has a place for comments or discussion. I also encourage everyone to send me photos to share with the group in the form of slide-shows on an ongoing basis even after the course has been completed.
And here’s a break-down of the different modules.
All are provided with clear step-by-step videos and text as well as a printable downloadable pdf.
Single Soumak
The Single Soumak module focuses on the basic concept of Soumak and the most common variations (Closed versus Open, and Dots).
Vertical Soumak
Vertical Soumak techniques build on the Single Soumak method, making it possible to create intricate lines otherwise difficult to obtain in tapestry.
Double Soumak
Double Soumak introduces the method of combining the different forms of wrapping together to create multiple varieties and effects.
More Double Soumak
Because this grouping is so large, it is broken up into two sections. This is a continuation of Double Soumak variations
Knots
Various methods of making Knots are covered in this section, including a little known French Knot.
Other Soumak Methods
This module covers techniques that don’t quite fit in another category.
I have poured my heart and soul into this course over the past four months, weaving little more in my daily tapestry practice than class samples! I’m happy to say that feedback has been favorable (!)
but don’t take my word for it…
Here’s what students are saying…
“Love the class. If I were to critique this class it would be an A plus, plus, plus. All of the work you have put into it shows. It is the most thorough and concise class that I have ever taken. It has a pleasant direct format, which I love…. and Loved the slideshow, it looked very professional, and difficult to put together…”

“This course was incredibly thorough. From the beginning there was a richness to the content. Kennita has great knowledge of the technique and presents it in a manner that is enjoyable.”

Just completed the 'Many Faces of Soumak' online course - a fascinating and very satisfying learning experience. Kennita explains each step very clearly, through videos and printable sheets, plus adds examples of how soumak, in all its forms, can be used in tapestry art. The course has opened my eyes to exciting new techniques to integrate into my own practice.
