Like so many others who teach in-person workshops, this summer I had to face reality. There would be no more teaching gigs for the rest of the year. Or next year, either, most likely. It took me a while to accept it (a couple of months!) but once I did, I started researching how to take my classes online. I gotta say, it has seriously cut into my weaving time!

A lot of what’s involved in teaching online classes wasn’t new to me. I had an idea of what I was getting into. I had a knitting membership site for years where I would share a pattern each month with articles and videos to support the techniques.

But while some of what I wanted to do was the same, a LOT of it is different. I had a lot to learn about all the options available now. I don’t remember even considering live events before; those options online can be overwhelming! Finally, after making the initial decisions, I started the steps in putting my Tapestry 101 and 201 classes online in August. 

But they just kept growing. And growing. 

Until now - still growing, but… without further ado…

Here’s what I’m working on. I have three courses opening up in the next couple of months. Tapestry 101, 201, and The Many Faces of Soumak.  I hesitate to put this in print, but here goes. I also have an entire series in the works for next year. There. I’ve said it. I’ve kept this all a secret for a long time. I feel the load lifting already!

Tapestry 101

Part 1 covers a few of the basic techniques: Stripes, blocks with slits, diagonals, and curves. All done on a simple frame loom made with stretcher bars, with two methods of warping the frame.  Part 2 goes into designing tapestries with an emphasis on art and design elements using the techniques taught in Part 1.

I’ve also put together a kit for this class. It’s optional. This, too, took months; sampling and researching different yarns and materials. I like to teach my 101 class with inexpensive materials (stretcher bars, hair picks, even craft sticks) but with quality warp and weft.  However, links and suggestions are included for anyone wanting to dive into specialized tools and looms from the beginning.

Tapestry 201

This course takes off where 101 ends. It includes warping demos for small slotted looms like the Easel Weaver and Hokett and moves on to introduce tensioning looms (starting with the Saffron loom) and warping the Mirrix or Arras. Techniques in this course include some of my favorites:  hatching 3 ways, locking shapes, and eccentric weaving. It also introduces a wider range of tapestry yarns. Again, Part 2 will be about using what you learn to create your own unique tapestry.

The Many Faces of Soumak

Ah, my love. Soumak. Who knew there were so many ways to create texture and line with Soumak? I could go on and on here, but suffice it to say this will be a very hefty course diving into over 20 ways to apply  this wonderful technique.

These courses will all include a “design your own” section. With feedback. I feel it’s important to start implementing what you learn early on to keep from stalling later or letting intimidation set in.  With that said, it’s not a requirement by any means. Think of it more as a bonus!
